GMO apples – yikes!

appleA Canadian company (Okanagan Specialty Fruits) has announced the introduction of GMO Arctic Granny Smith and gold Delicious apples into the US market. The purpose was to resist browning when the apple is cut. How many people really care if they turn brown? This is part of being an apple.

Anyway, the company claims they will clearly label the apples as Arctic brand, but unless people know that means GMO they will not see any “red flags”. The US Apple Association is not supporting this and Canada’s BC Fruit Growers Assn. is advising buyers to avoid all US Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples if they want to be certain they are not consuming GMO.

Some hazards to eating GMO foods that have been reported are allergies, resistance to antibiotics, ingestion of pesticides, suppression of genes in our own bodies or overexpression of genes, causing a wide variety of results. One consequence of overexpression, for example, can be cancer.

Doctor says “its all in your head”.

electromagnetic-field-98656_640When you develop mysterious symptoms and you go to the doctor and he can’t find any reason for them, he says it must be psychological.  So you go home, and through the process of elimination try different diets, clean your house more, meditate more, stop using chemical cleaners, etc….. and your symptoms are still there!  Could you be “allergic” to something unseen?

We have many friends who have developed sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. These are those invisible waves coming from your computer, cell phone, Wi-fi, microwave, plasma TV, fluorescent lighting, the GPS in your car (or airplane if you fly one), and even the wiring in your house. Symptoms can manifest as headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, nausea, exhaustion.  The name for this affliction is electrohypersensitivity (EHS). According to research it  is characterized by a broad range of nonspecific multiple-organ symptoms implying both acute and chronic inflammatory processes, involving mainly skin and nervous, respiratory, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal systems, in most cases self-reported in absence of organic pathological signs except skin manifestations .

For folks with EHS it is difficult to go anywhere since most of our environments are filled with these invisible waves. There is a non-profit website that explains this further and is trying to develop a list of places that are free from wifi, cell towers, smart meters, etc that these folks can stay when they travel or even find permanent housing. If you know of any place like this please contact them. SAFEHelpsYou.org

Preventing bone loss – an easy primer.

arthritis

This post is a wee bit long but you need all the info you can get to make a good decision about preventing bone loss.

pix: arthritisresearchuk.org

Humans need bones to stay healthy throughout their life. Anyone who is an athlete or exercises knows the importance of keeping those bones strong. And, when one breaks it definitely puts a crimp in your lifestyle. What many do not realize that once we are out of our twenties, we start losing bone mass. As part of the aging process the body tends to reabsorb more calcium and phosphate from the bones than is maintained within the bone for new bone formation. Bone is living tissue that is constantly undergoing bone removal (osteoclasts) and bone formation (osteoblasts).

Without going into the biological methodology that supports these processes, we all assume that calcium is the bone maker, but taking too much calcium can have negative repercussions. The reason being; the co-factors that help improve bone density may be missing, and thus allow calcium to be deposited in unwanted places instead of being properly utilized by the bones. These co-factors include vitamin D because it promotes calcium and phosphorus absorption by simulating bone calcium mobilization. Phosphorus is essential to be taken with calcium as it builds bones more effectively. Magnesium is a key co-factor which keeps the calcium dissolved in the blood instead of having it congregate as kidney stones or arterial plaque. Clinical studies have shown that people with osteoarthritis have low magnesium levels. Bones are more likely to break easily without sufficient levels of magnesium because that element helps make them more pliant, as with calcium alone bones can become brittle. Magnesium to calcium ratio should be 1:1. Vitamin K-2 is also essential as a co-factor as it helps maintain bone density and moves calcium through the bloodstream and into the bones. Also maintaining proper B12, B6 and folate levels is needed as they promote healthy homocysteine levels. (High homocysteine levels have been considered a risk factor for osteoporosis.) Keeping testosterone at normal levels is important in maintaining bone density and keeps bones from being fragile. Men with low-T and menopausal women with lower levels of testosterone should consider normalizing this hormone to support bone health. Velvet antler is a little known natural supplement for bones as it exerts androgenic effects, which means that it may increase the production of testosterone and its metabolites.

The most important co-factors lie in trace minerals, specifically, manganese, zinc, copper and boron. Manganese enhances bone growth and repair by stimulating the osteoblasts and suppressing the osteoclasts. Zinc must be present to maintain proper osteoblast levels and copper supports bone synthesis. Boron is essential because not only supports bone strength, but it facilitates calcium and magnesium absorption and reduces calcium excretion. It is the ultimate carrier of nutrients in the body. One study revealed that postmenopausal boron-deficient women lost more calcium and magnesium from their bodies than when they were on the boron supplementation. Finding a good trace-mineral supplement with these essential co-factors may not be all that easy. Trace is the key, as this “small” form of mineral crosses into the cell wall (osmolality) where it becomes utilized. A mineral solid as found in a multi-vitamin, may float around inside the body and not be absorbed by the cell where it would become an efficient co-factor. Therefore, a liquid trace mineral supplement is preferred to the minerals in a multi-vitamin.

The #1 supplement I use

deerYou may not have heard of velvet antler (the humanely harvest rack on a deer) but it has so many good uses I thought I’d mention it. I’ve used it for my knee problems and it has eliminated that bone on bone grinding and supported my knee during meniscus tears so I can still ski. It also is great for supporting skin which we need as we wrinkle.  Just thought I’d include it in a post in case you need to fix something it can help.

Used for:

  • Anemia – increases blood cell production (due to method of antlers to grow quickly)
  • Anti-inflammatory – reduces inflammatory response
  • Fracture recovery speeded up – velvet polypeptides promote osteoblast precursors
  • Immune support – builds white blood cells and increases T-cells (studies show   lymphoma cells are not promoted)
  • Joint support – as an anti-inflammatory reduces pain, assists in tissue regeneration by  assisting in renewal of replacement stem cells and providing growth factors
  • Muscle/Connective tissue supported – due to neurotropin growth factors (nerve repair)
  • Osteoarthritis relief – green lipid mussel included in formula. Velvet slows down the  loss of cartilage, anti-inflammatory, stimulates cartilage repair  (glycosaminoglycans) and inhibits enzymes that deplete cartilage nutrition.
  • Skin support – antigen control from allergic conditions, anecdotal evidence for relief from psoriasis in humans and alopecia in dogs
  • Stress mitigation – supports the adrenals as reactive to stress
  • Wound healing – tissue regeneration due to the growth factors and NACGlucosamine present in the antler. Clinical trial have confirmed quicker heal times with velvet antler
  • Contains:
    • Hyaluronic acid (cement of connective tissue)
    • Glycosaminoglycans (A family of carbohydrates that help with the maintenance and support of collagen and elastin)
    • Condroitin sulfate (cartilage protector)
    • Glucosamine sulfate (important for joint elasticity and cartilage)
    • Glycosphingolipids (essential proteins for cell metabolism)
    • Collagen (structural protein for skin, cartilage, bones)
    • Essential Fatty Acids (anti-inflammatory and energy source)
    • Minerals
    • Monoamine-oxidase inhibitors (mood enhancers)
    • Prostaglandins (anti-inflammatories)
    • Phosphorus (essential for bones and teeth)
    • Polysaccharides (blood clotting regulator)
    • Amino acids (building blocks of protein)
    • Growth factors (aid in cartilage cell development)

Epigenetics – the ultimate healing answer.

Epigenetics means “control above genetics”. It is the study of how environmental influences, including nutrition, stress and emotions can modify our genes without changing their basic blueprint. And, this change can be passed down through generations. Studies have shown that electromagnetics can be one of these environmental factors as they are 100 times more efficient in relaying information than physical signals such as hormones, neurotransmitters, etc.

Receptor “antennas” on our cells can read vibrational energy fields such as light, sound and radio frequencies and thus can change the biology of our cells which harbor positive and negative  electromagnetic charges of amino acids (protein). These can be altered by the epigenetic factors including electromagnetic fields such as those emanating from cell phones and Wi-Fi. These environmental signals and regulatory proteins are the ones that directs the activity of our genes.

Therefore, when you say you are genetically disposed to a disease that doesn’t mean you will get it. Epigenetics can alter your genetic disposition. Thoughts are vibration and can alter the biology of cells. Negative thoughts are as strong as the negative influence of EMFs from our technological toys. It has been proven in laboratories that belief creates vibrations that alter outcome.

A doctor friend once had a patient who had two personalities. In one he believed he was diabetic and in the second didn’t give it any credence. So, when he changed personalities and they tested him, he had no sign of diabetes! Beware of the vibrations that are altering your cellular function. Even food contains vibrations and microwaving it destroys the energy which the cells can not now use. Negative vibrations from toxins, pesticides, TV news stories, fear, anger, etc. can all effect the outcome of our cellular functioning.

If you want to stay healthy you MUST believe that the biology of vibrations that is the core of epigenetics, can determine your future.

Monsanto weed killer linked to many diseases lawsuit says.

In the lawsuit filed in California, Monsanto is accused of: The deliberate falsification to conceal the fact that glyphosate is harmful to humans and animals. The class action lawsuit (Case No: BC 578 942) was filed in Los Angeles County, California against biotechnology giant Monsanto. It alleges that Monsanto is guilty of false advertising by claiming that glyphosate, the active ingredient in their best-selling herbicide, Roundup, “targets an enzyme only found in plants and not in humans or animals.” You can see this statement marked clearly on some of Monsanto’s products sold in the state. The lawsuit attests that the enzyme in question, EPSP synthase, is found in the microbiota that reside in our intestinal tracts, and therefore the enzyme is “found in humans and animals.” Due to the disruption of gut flora by glyphosate, Monsanto’s chemicals do indeed affect humans.“. . . glyphosate is linked to stomach and bowel problems, indigestion, ulcers, colitis, gluten intolerance, sleeplessness, lethargy, depression, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, allergies, obesity, diabetes, infertility, liver disease, renal failure, autism, Alzheimer’s, endocrine disruption, and the W.H.O. recently announced glyphosate is ‘probably carcinogenic’.” Glyphosate is found in various weed killers, including the brands listed below:

  • Roundup
  • Bronco
  • Glifonox
  • Kleen-up
  • Rodeo
  • Weedoff

Unsafe drugs: drug companies just for profit, not for your wellbeing?

drugsThe “trade treaty,” the TPP, in front of Congress now, will, if passed, eventually morph into a close-knit international collective of government agencies that collaborate on medical-drug “safety.”

Translation: the US FDA and Health Canada, and the Australian TGA, and the New Zealand MEDSAFE, and the medical regulatory agencies of Singapore, Vietnam, Brunei, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, and Peru will: declare dangerous drugs to be safe. Together. On behalf of the corporations who manufacture them. Among other corporate benefits, the TPP will allow pharmaceutical companies to extend the life of patents on drugs. And those drugs will be exported and imported, from country to country, with far less oversight re their destructive health effects, because, in phase one, drug companies will be able to sue governments, in private tribunals, for “restraint of free trade,” when the specter of drug-dangers is raised and drug-imports are refused and turned away.

Case in point. One out of hundreds. Vioxx, a drug to treat pain and arthritis. Manufacturer: Merck. Approved by the US FDA as safe and effective in 1999. Before it was withdrawn from the market in 2004, Merck pocketed in the vicinity of $12.5 billion in global sales. Finally, after 10,000 individual suits were filed against Merck, and 190 class-actions, and a 2010 US federal case, Merck paid out roughly $8 billion in judgments.Once Vioxx was taken off the market, it was revealed it had caused between 88,000 and 140,000 cases of heart disease—and between 30 and 40 percent of these cases were probably fatal. These are very conservative estimates. How had that mass destruction happened? In America it was through the efforts of the US FDA, the agency responsible for certifying medicines as safe and effective before they are released for public use. Once the FDA decides a drug is safe and effective, the US company that manufactures it can, under the TPP, demand that every other TPP country accept that judgment as well. For instance, if the US FDA claimed Vioxx was safe, then Merck, the US company that manufactured it, could sell it to the 12-member countries of the TPP, and if there were any government refusals on the grounds of safety, Merck could sue the refusing government in a secret corporate court and win. Even though Vioxx is deadly.

“It is simply no longer possible to believe much of the clinical research that is published, or to rely on the judgment of trusted physicians or authoritative medical guidelines. I take no pleasure in this conclusion, which I reached slowly and reluctantly over my two decades as an editor of The New England Journal of Medicine.” (Marcia Angell, MD, “Drug Companies and Doctors: A story of Corruption.” NY Review of Books, Jan. 15, 2009.)

Pain cream on your hands can kill your cat!

Veterinarians have long warned that pain medications like ibuprofen are toxic to pets. And it now looks like merely using a pain relief cream can put cats at risk.

That’s what happened in two households, according to a report issued Friday by the Food and Drug Administration. Two cats in one household developed kidney failure and recovered with attention from a veterinarian. But in a second household, three cats died.

When the veterinarians performed necropsies on the three dead cats, they found physical damage in the cats’ intestines and kidneys, evidence of the toxic effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. NSAIDs include ibuprofen, like Advil and Motrin, and naproxen, which is in Aleve.

Ibuprofen is the most common drug that pets eat, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, perhaps since many of the pills are candy-coated. In pets, the drugs can cause stomach or intestinal ulcers and kidney failure.

But these cats died by flurbiprofen, another NSAID. In the case of its most recent victims, the cat owner applied a lotion or cream containing flurbiprofen to treat muscle or arthritis pain. And it’s highly unusual for a cat to show up at the vet’s office; usually it’s the dogs that get into trouble from exposure to NSAIDs.
