The USDA has released its final GMO labeling rule. The so-called GMO labeling law will apply only to a narrow set of foods. Congress and the USDA have offered a number of loopholes and exemptions to food companies, undermining any semblance of a consumer’s right to know. The agency has decided to use the term “bioengineered”—a term many Americans may not be familiar with—rather than GMO. Many Americans know the term “GMO” and can connect it to the labeling debate—so the government decides to use a different term that sounds more innocuous.
The rule establishes a threshold for the “inadvertent or technically unavoidable” presence of GMO material of up to five percent; foods that meet this criteria will not have to be labeled as bioengineered. An ingredient in a food can have up to 5% of its weight be GMO if it is “unavoidable” or “inadvertent” and not have to identify that there is GMO material in the food. So-called “highly-refined foods” made from GMO crops—such as sugar from GMO sugarbeets or high fructose corn syrup from GMO corn—will not require a label. The USDA has altered the symbol that may be used by companies to communicate the presence of GMOs. and says “bioengineered” rather than GMO and depicts a field and a sun, which is intentionally deceptive giving the impression it is healthy.
If you think that your state can pass a stronger labeling law, think again. The law passed by Congress prevents states from instituting labeling laws that differ with the federal law. And to make matters worse no one needs to tell you whether the feed that is given to animals we eat has been poisoned with Roundup needed to preserve these GMO strains. So what are you eating for dinner?

Ground-breaking research at the Gene Expression and Therapy Group at King’s College London in the UK by Dr. Antoniou author of GMO Myths and Truth, revealed that organs were unhealthy in rats given Roundup in doses much lower that what the established safety levels are. Roundup is the glyphosate chemical used on GMO groups to control weeds and ends up in our food. These rats developed non-alcoholic fatty-liver disease, a condition that affects 25% of the U.S. population. The group used cutting edge compositional analytical methods to determine the health status of the rats’ livers compared to non-GMO varieties of corn. they discovered clear hallmarks of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which correlated with previous observations of an increased incidence of tissue necrosis or liver tissue. They determined this in part stems from the fact that isolating genes or proteins which are supposed to work in synergy with co-factors can cause problems we have yet to see manifest.

Next on the agenda for keeping our choices GMO-free is the development of organic cotton plants that have distinctive leaves so they can be distinguished from GMO plants. Ninety-nine percent of the cotton grown in Texas is GMO and the organic cotton farmers are trying to stay alive in the sea of pesticides.
Cotton is self-pollinating but also can be insect pollinated. Unfortunately this can raise havoc on the bee population if the flower is sprayed because of the GMO resistant seeds ability to withstand the pesticides. There are few seed choices for cotton farmers with only 4 varieties out of 84 that were non-GMO.
In order to combat this Jane Dever, cotton breeder at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Seed Matters are developing solutions to address this threat. Their goal is to breed organic cotton plants with a different leaf shape than GM plants. One such leaf from a specific cotton variety looks like that from the Okra plant as differentiated from conventional GM crops which are fuller leaves. If successful farmers could remove plants that have the normal leaf and visibly keep the ones with the “okra” leaf. They hope these will be available by 2020 and also to have better organic seed varieties available by then as well.
If this works we may see the crossover into other crops that have been inundated with GMO seeds such as cottonseed which is used as feed for dairy cows. This would really put us on a path that gives consumers more of a choice to go non-GMO.
The new GMO labeling law (scanning the barcode on foods) will tell you what foods are GMO. But they don’t mean that they are organic! When you look for non-GMO foods you might think you are safe. But, even if the food is not GMO it may contain the same pesticides used on GMO foods such as the glyphosphate. If you want to be absolutely sure these carcinogenic compounds don’t end up in your body we suggest only buying products that contain the USDA Organic label. This means not only are they GMO free but weren’t grown with pesticides.
So.. the new law just passed in Congress lets you know if a product is GMO or not… or does it? Only if you have a phone with an app that lets you read barcodes. And they leave it up to the companies to determine what they say about that so who knows what the truth will be.
For the rest of us who don’t go around scanning supermarket shelf items, you can buy organic. Most health food products gladly announce GMO free and by definition, certified organic means – no pesticides. The Non GMO Project also encourages manufactures to submit their products for review so they can proudly display this label on their foods.

If you aren’t up to snuff on why you should go GMO free – search what glyphosate (the pesticide used on GMO crops to kill weeds) does to you. Also check out the blog https://gmoupdates.wordpress.com for the latest info. You don’t want to be surprised by getting sick and wondering why all those good looking ears of corn, potatoes, apples, sugar cane, winter squash, papaya, soy, aspartame, canola oil and dairy from cows fed GMO feed could have wrecked your immune response.

A Canadian company (Okanagan Specialty Fruits) has announced the introduction of GMO Arctic Granny Smith and gold Delicious apples into the US market. The purpose was to resist browning when the apple is cut. How many people really care if they turn brown? This is part of being an apple.
Anyway, the company claims they will clearly label the apples as Arctic brand, but unless people know that means GMO they will not see any “red flags”. The US Apple Association is not supporting this and Canada’s BC Fruit Growers Assn. is advising buyers to avoid all US Granny Smith and Golden Delicious apples if they want to be certain they are not consuming GMO.
Some hazards to eating GMO foods that have been reported are allergies, resistance to antibiotics, ingestion of pesticides, suppression of genes in our own bodies or overexpression of genes, causing a wide variety of results. One consequence of overexpression, for example, can be cancer.

This is not the first time Monsanto has used its clever propaganda to influence our nation’s youth. The Council for Biotechnology Information widely circulated a Biotechnology Basics Activity Book for kids, a disturbing and brightly colored obvious intent to ‘educate’ the children.
Children are like little sponges, soaking up everything they see and hear, which makes them particularly vulnerable to being sucked in by propaganda. And the effects could be life-long—at least they’re intended to be. Indeed you’d be hard-pressed to convince an adult, who from childhood was taught the merits of genetically engineered foods, that there’s anything wrong with such alterations of the food supply.
4-H is really the perfect vehicle for Big Ag to manipulate an entire generation, using tactics not that different from the youth indoctrination strategies employed by political extremists in order to gain children’s trust and then “groom” them however they wish. Think about it—what better way to control the future of our food system than to brainwash 6.8 million impressionable youth into believing that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are safe and beneficial, if not the answer to all the problems of the world?
If corporations like Monsanto are successful in hijacking the minds of our youth, they will essentially be in control the decisions and behavior of the next generation—and there is nothing to stop them until a great deal of damage is done to you, your children and grandchildren, and our planet. This is why it is so critical for you to be involved in your children’s activities and take an active role in their education. Do not fall into the trap of assuming that, just because they are involved with a “reputable” organization like 4-H, that they are getting unbiased and truthful information.
