GMOs hidden in new labeling law

The USDA has released its final GMO labeling rule. The so-called GMO labeling law will apply only to a narrow set of foods. Congress and the USDA have offered a number of loopholes and exemptions to food companies, undermining any semblance of a consumer’s right to know. The agency has decided to use the term “bioengineered”—a term many Americans may not be familiar with—rather than GMO. Many Americans know the term “GMO” and can connect it to the labeling debate—so the government decides to use a different term that sounds more innocuous.

The rule establishes a threshold for the “inadvertent or technically unavoidable” presence of GMO material of up to five percent; foods that meet this criteria will not have to be labeled as bioengineered. An ingredient in a food can have up to 5% of its weight be GMO if it is “unavoidable” or “inadvertent” and not have to identify that there is GMO material in the food. So-called “highly-refined foods” made from GMO crops—such as sugar from GMO sugarbeets or high fructose corn syrup from GMO corn—will not require a label. The USDA has altered the symbol that may be used by companies to communicate the presence of GMOs. and says “bioengineered” rather than GMO and depicts a field and a sun, which is intentionally deceptive giving the impression it is healthy.

If you think that your state can pass a stronger labeling law, think again. The law passed by Congress prevents states from instituting labeling laws that differ with the federal law. And to make matters worse no one needs to tell you whether the feed that is given to animals we eat has been poisoned with Roundup needed to preserve these GMO strains. So what are you eating for dinner?

Scientists find new risks for GMOs glyphosate

gmoGround-breaking research at the Gene Expression and Therapy Group at King’s College London in the UK by Dr. Antoniou author of GMO Myths and Truth,  revealed that organs were unhealthy in rats given Roundup in doses much lower that what the established safety levels are. Roundup is the glyphosate chemical used on GMO groups to control weeds and ends up in our food. These rats developed non-alcoholic fatty-liver disease, a condition that affects 25% of the U.S. population. The group used cutting edge compositional analytical methods to determine the health status of the rats’ livers compared to non-GMO varieties of corn. they discovered clear hallmarks of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which correlated with previous observations of an increased incidence of tissue necrosis or liver tissue. They determined this in part stems from the fact that isolating genes or proteins which are supposed to work in synergy with co-factors can cause problems we have yet to see manifest.

Identify non-GMO through leaves.

cottonNext on the agenda for keeping our choices GMO-free is the development of organic cotton plants that have distinctive leaves so they can be distinguished from GMO plants.  Ninety-nine percent of the cotton grown in Texas is GMO and the organic cotton farmers are trying to stay alive in the sea of pesticides.

Cotton is self-pollinating but also can be insect pollinated. Unfortunately this can raise havoc on the bee population if the flower is sprayed because of the GMO resistant seeds ability to withstand the pesticides. There are few seed choices for cotton farmers with only 4 varieties out of 84 that were non-GMO.

In order to combat this Jane Dever, cotton breeder at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Seed Matters are developing solutions to address this threat. Their goal is to breed organic cotton plants with a different leaf shape than GM plants. One such leaf from a specific cotton variety looks like that from the Okra plant as differentiated from conventional GM crops which are fuller leaves.  If successful farmers could remove plants that have the normal leaf and visibly keep the ones with the “okra” leaf. They hope these will be available by 2020 and also to have better organic seed varieties available by then as well.

If this works we may see the crossover into other crops that have been inundated with GMO seeds such as cottonseed which is used as feed for dairy cows. This would really put us on a path that gives consumers more of a choice to go non-GMO.

Pesticides bad even if not GMO

The new GMO labeling law (scanning the barcode on foods) will tell you what foods are GMO. But they don’t mean that they are organic! When you look for non-GMO foods you might think you are safe. But, even if the food is not GMO it may contain the same pesticides used on GMO foods such as the glyphosphate. If you want to be absolutely sure these carcinogenic compounds don’t end up in your body we suggest only buying products that contain the USDA Organic label. This means not only are they GMO free but weren’t grown with pesticides.

Confusing GMO labeling law

So.. the new law just passed in Congress lets you know if a product is GMO or not… or does it? Only if you have a phone with an app that lets you read barcodes. And they leave it up to the companies to determine what they say about that so who knows what the truth will be.

For the rest of us who don’t go around scanning supermarket shelf items, you can buy organic. Most health food products gladly announce GMO free and by definition, certified organic means – no pesticides. The Non GMO Project also encourages manufactures to submit their products for review so they can proudly display this label on their foods.

If you aren’t up to snuff on why you should go GMO free – search what glyphosate (the pesticide used on GMO crops to kill weeds) does to you. Also check out the blog https://gmoupdates.wordpress.com for the latest info. You don’t want to be surprised by getting sick and wondering why all those good looking ears of corn, potatoes, apples, sugar cane, winter squash, papaya, soy, aspartame, canola oil and dairy from cows fed GMO feed could have wrecked your immune response.

Things in your drinks.

stadionrunneronlyWith many of us switching from carbonated soda pop to fruit, flavored water and tea drinks , we still have to be aware of ingredients. Some of those drinks are not organic, some may still use dyes or preservatives or sweeteners that are not good for your body even though the manufactures say they are safe in small amounts.

Coal tar derivatives used for coloring such as Red #40 and Yellow #6 can cause sensitivity to viruses and have been linked to cancer. Cochineal extract is used as a cola coloring and is basically ground up female cochineal bugs from South America. While this may not be appealing, we still don’t know if they are laden with critters or pesticides that could affect our health. Artificial sweeteners that go by several names now but started out as aspartame, when heated (like if left in your hot car in the summer) breaks down to toxic methyl alcohol. It has  been implicated in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and can cause headaches and seizures in some people. AceK sounds safe enough but it has shown to cause cancer in animals. Sucralose is chlorinated sugar and has shown in studies to have a negative effect on the thymus gland, decreased red blood cell count, diarrhea among other potential conditions.

Agave is a sweetener in many natural foods drinks. The fructose content of agave syrup is much higher than that of high fructose corn syrup, which is of concern since some research has linked high fructose intake to weight gain (especially around the abdominal area), high triglycerides, heart disease and insulin resistance. And I’m sure by now you’ve read by blog posts on why to stay away from high fructose corn syrup (not the least is that it is GMO).

Chemicals such a Propylene glycol and ployethylene glycol (PEG) are sometimes added to drinks.  The former has shown to be toxic and induce seizures in epileptics as well as affect the heart. It also inhibits the growth of the friendly bacteria in your intestines leading to constipation. PEG is used as a drug to induce diarrhea before surgery. Now why would you want to have that in your drink? It also has shown to interfere with blood thinners, birth control pills, and antiinflammatories.

So, the next time you pick up that sports drink, protein shake, or health drink – read the label!

Can GMO food make us antibiotic resistant?

gmoGenetic engineering (GE) is the modification of an organism’s genetic composition by artificial means, often involving the transfer of specific traits, or genes, from one organism into a plant or animal of an entirely different species. When gene transfer occurs, the resulting organism is called transgenic or a GMO (genetically modified organism). Critics of genetic engineering believe that GE foods must be proven safe before they are sold to the public. Specific concerns over genetic engineering include:

Antibiotic resistance. Almost all GE foods contain antibiotic resistance marker genes that help producers know whether the new genetic material was transferred to the host plant or animal. GE food could make disease-causing bacteria even more resistant to antibiotics, which could increase the spread of disease throughout the world.

Allergic reactions. There are two concerns regarding allergic reactions. The first is with known allergens. For example, if genes from nuts are inserted into other foods, it could cause severe reactions in people with nut allergies. Therefore, there is concern that people with known allergies will not be aware that the genetically engineered food they are eating contains substances to which they are allergic. The second concern is that new allergies might be created, since new combinations of genes and traits have the potential to cause allergic reactions that have never existed before.

Loss of nutrition. Genetic engineering may change the nutritional value of food.

Gluten sensitivity linked to GMO

cornThe Institute for Responsible Technology recently released a report proposing a link between genetically modified foods and gluten-related disorders. In the report, a team of experts suggests that GM foods may be an important environmental trigger for gluten sensitivity, which is estimated to affect as many as 18 million Americans.

There are 9 GMO food crops currently being grown for commercial use: soy, corn, cotton oil, canola oil, sugar from sugar beets, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya and alfalfa. The report focus’ on corn primarily as this crop is engineered to withstand an insecticide called Bt-toxin which is designed to puncture holes in insect cells. But, studies show it does the same in human cells linking it to leaky-gut which physicians consistently see in gluten-sensitivity patients. Therefore, to be safe eat only certified organic varieties of these foods.

Study confirms GMO can be toxic

The Seralini two-year study, remarkably the most detailed long-term study ever published concerning GMO health impacts, went through rigorous peer-review and was publicly available for over a year in the journal of Food and Chemical Toxicology. It revealed that consumption of GMO corn sprayed with RoundupTM showed liver and kidney organ damage, higher female morbidity rates (with females dying two to three times more than controls in all rat groups) and additionally, cancer tumors starting in the fourth month of the study. In treated males, the liver and kidneys were the most commonly impacted organs, and deaths were mostly due to liver and kidney disease.

Please, if you care about your health don’t buy GMO grown food or meat from animals fed GMO feed. Industry reports and studies will say there are no toxic effects, but if you research this you will find differently, including the destruction of bees – no bees – no food for humans!!
