Best Tip for Dieting

Did you know that the most widely used tactics for dieting include:

  • Watching portion sizes (34%)
  • Controlling the total amount of food eaten (28%)
  • Reducing the amount of junk food (25%)
  • Monitoring calories (24%)
  • Getting rid of snacks (21%)
  • Reducing sugar (21%)
  • Taking weight loss supplements (over $2 billion spent annually)

Well, there is one way you can cut desire for many fattening foods but it takes a little will power.  We suggest you stop eating all forms of sugar or sweeteners for 10 days. For some reason this is the time it takes for your body to lose its addiction. I know this may be hard so in the meantime try using stevia (an herb) or sucking on a cinnamon stick. Do not substitute artificial sweeteners as not only are they unhealthy, but they will not let you detox the sweet tooth desire.

If you try this (we have and it works) please leave us a comment. And check out our new online course you can watch on vimeo with modules about Joint Health, Stress, Sleep, Memory Loss and more. Click Here for videos

Confusing GMO labeling law

So.. the new law just passed in Congress lets you know if a product is GMO or not… or does it? Only if you have a phone with an app that lets you read barcodes. And they leave it up to the companies to determine what they say about that so who knows what the truth will be.

For the rest of us who don’t go around scanning supermarket shelf items, you can buy organic. Most health food products gladly announce GMO free and by definition, certified organic means – no pesticides. The Non GMO Project also encourages manufactures to submit their products for review so they can proudly display this label on their foods.

If you aren’t up to snuff on why you should go GMO free – search what glyphosate (the pesticide used on GMO crops to kill weeds) does to you. Also check out the blog https://gmoupdates.wordpress.com for the latest info. You don’t want to be surprised by getting sick and wondering why all those good looking ears of corn, potatoes, apples, sugar cane, winter squash, papaya, soy, aspartame, canola oil and dairy from cows fed GMO feed could have wrecked your immune response.

Things in your drinks.

stadionrunneronlyWith many of us switching from carbonated soda pop to fruit, flavored water and tea drinks , we still have to be aware of ingredients. Some of those drinks are not organic, some may still use dyes or preservatives or sweeteners that are not good for your body even though the manufactures say they are safe in small amounts.

Coal tar derivatives used for coloring such as Red #40 and Yellow #6 can cause sensitivity to viruses and have been linked to cancer. Cochineal extract is used as a cola coloring and is basically ground up female cochineal bugs from South America. While this may not be appealing, we still don’t know if they are laden with critters or pesticides that could affect our health. Artificial sweeteners that go by several names now but started out as aspartame, when heated (like if left in your hot car in the summer) breaks down to toxic methyl alcohol. It has  been implicated in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and can cause headaches and seizures in some people. AceK sounds safe enough but it has shown to cause cancer in animals. Sucralose is chlorinated sugar and has shown in studies to have a negative effect on the thymus gland, decreased red blood cell count, diarrhea among other potential conditions.

Agave is a sweetener in many natural foods drinks. The fructose content of agave syrup is much higher than that of high fructose corn syrup, which is of concern since some research has linked high fructose intake to weight gain (especially around the abdominal area), high triglycerides, heart disease and insulin resistance. And I’m sure by now you’ve read by blog posts on why to stay away from high fructose corn syrup (not the least is that it is GMO).

Chemicals such a Propylene glycol and ployethylene glycol (PEG) are sometimes added to drinks.  The former has shown to be toxic and induce seizures in epileptics as well as affect the heart. It also inhibits the growth of the friendly bacteria in your intestines leading to constipation. PEG is used as a drug to induce diarrhea before surgery. Now why would you want to have that in your drink? It also has shown to interfere with blood thinners, birth control pills, and antiinflammatories.

So, the next time you pick up that sports drink, protein shake, or health drink – read the label!

Can GMO food make us antibiotic resistant?

gmoGenetic engineering (GE) is the modification of an organism’s genetic composition by artificial means, often involving the transfer of specific traits, or genes, from one organism into a plant or animal of an entirely different species. When gene transfer occurs, the resulting organism is called transgenic or a GMO (genetically modified organism). Critics of genetic engineering believe that GE foods must be proven safe before they are sold to the public. Specific concerns over genetic engineering include:

Antibiotic resistance. Almost all GE foods contain antibiotic resistance marker genes that help producers know whether the new genetic material was transferred to the host plant or animal. GE food could make disease-causing bacteria even more resistant to antibiotics, which could increase the spread of disease throughout the world.

Allergic reactions. There are two concerns regarding allergic reactions. The first is with known allergens. For example, if genes from nuts are inserted into other foods, it could cause severe reactions in people with nut allergies. Therefore, there is concern that people with known allergies will not be aware that the genetically engineered food they are eating contains substances to which they are allergic. The second concern is that new allergies might be created, since new combinations of genes and traits have the potential to cause allergic reactions that have never existed before.

Loss of nutrition. Genetic engineering may change the nutritional value of food.

Foods that have been approved for GMO by the FDA but not necessarily in the grocery store yet are starred (*):  Alfalfa, Cherry Tomato*, Corn, Flax*, Papaya, Potato*, Rice*, Soybean, Squash, Sugar beet, Tomato*

More Sugar Spurs Better Chance of Heart Problems.

coneSummer’s coming and we all like ice cream,  lemonade, and maybe a Margarita or two.  But… listen up! The  Journal of the American Medical Assn. recently published a research study that found a significant relationship between the additional consumption of sugar and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) death.

A highly controlled study that took  into account age, sex, race/ethnicity, sociodemographic, behavioral and clinical characteristics recorded added sugar consumption as a percentage of average daily calories and determined that there was a significant relationship between added sugar and CVD. During the 2005-2010 time period, most adults consumed 10% or more of their daily calories from added sugar with 10% of all adults reviewed consuming 25% or more of their daily calories from added sugar.

Other studies have shown a large part of these sugar calories comes from what we drink. Sports, electrolyte and energy drinks may be loaded with sugar as are latte’s, soda, packaged fruit drink soda alternatives and even bottled teas. Don’t substitute those sugared beverages for sugar-free ones unless you have determined the artificial sweetener  (just as aspartame or AceK) does not come with a list of potential health risks.

Ck out our choice for an electrolyte beverage maker that has no sugar or artificial sweeteners. electroBlast.com   We found a 50% discount on that site to try specific flavors of the product.

Great Chinese Proverb

“One quarter of what you eat keeps you alive. The other three-quarters keep your doctor alive”

Alan Roettinger, author of “Speed Vegan”, advises that you should listen to how your body feels when you eat. If you feel bad after stuffing yourself, then you may develop guilt at eating so much.* This is an indicator you ought to listen to your feelings and design your eating habits so you always feeling good after you eat. He also advises food combining (no carbs with protein). We have been advising this for years telling folks… melon by itself, veggies go with anything, sugar compromises digestion so you don’t get much value from the food.. (no desert for awhile after the meal).

I recently was advised by my ND to go on a no sulfur diet (no chocolate, coffee, beans, cruciferous veggies, kale, etc). Six weeks later I feel so much lighter and “cleaner” although am getting kind of sick of squash and salad. If we listen to our bodies they may be better at advising us what to eat than all those commercials for weight loss diets.

Gluten sensitivity linked to GMO

cornThe Institute for Responsible Technology recently released a report proposing a link between genetically modified foods and gluten-related disorders. In the report, a team of experts suggests that GM foods may be an important environmental trigger for gluten sensitivity, which is estimated to affect as many as 18 million Americans.

There are 9 GMO food crops currently being grown for commercial use: soy, corn, cotton oil, canola oil, sugar from sugar beets, zucchini, yellow squash, Hawaiian papaya and alfalfa. The report focus’ on corn primarily as this crop is engineered to withstand an insecticide called Bt-toxin which is designed to puncture holes in insect cells. But, studies show it does the same in human cells linking it to leaky-gut which physicians consistently see in gluten-sensitivity patients. Therefore, to be safe eat only certified organic varieties of these foods.

Cancer free without chemo

One of our authors developed breast cancer a year ago and while in her 80s decided not to go traditional. She took an estrogen blocker drug and fermented soy with curcumin plus other supplements, gave up sugar, wine and ate organic. She got a clean bill of health after a year. Watch her story… and check out the product at the end…

8 ways sugar is killing you.

coneDr. Nancy Appleton, author of Suicide by Sugar, actually lists 146 reasons why sugar is ruining your health. We’ll look at eight for now.

(1) Sugar is a cancer cell’s favorite food. Even without having cancer, we all have a few cancer cells floating around.

When an acidic internal environment discourages normal cellular glucose metabolism with oxygen, those oxygen starved cells begin thriving by fermenting glucose and demanding more that our culture readily provides. Why encourage them?

(2) Candida yeast cells also exist in small amounts with everyone. When they overwhelm our friendly probiotic bacteria, we have Candida yeast overgrowth, which enables this fungus to infiltrate the body with all sorts of health problems.

Diets for discouraging and helping eliminate Candida promote complete abstinence from all forms of sugar until the overgrowth recedes. High sugar intake encourages Candida, which many say is cancer’s favorite habitat.

(3) Processed sugar and fructose are stripped of all mineral content and wind up leeching minerals from our bodies, including our teeth. They also inhibit mineral absorption, including magnesium. Magnesium is a commonly deficient and vitally important for over 300 metabolic processes.

(4) GMO corn is used to manufacture High Fructose Corn Syrup, and this process creates a mercury byproduct. GMO beets are used more now for creating sucrose (table sugar). Pure unprocessed sugar cane does contain nutrients, while processing involves nasty chemicals that can come along.

(5) Sugar is addictive. It stimulates central nervous system neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, giving you a pleasant buzz to crave more and promote overeating dead processed foods.

(6) Sugar creates glucose spikes that force the pancreas to produce insulin more often and beyond it’s normal capacity. This wears the pancreas down, limiting insulin production that leads to diabetes. Type II diabetes is insulin resistance, which is preceded by metabolic syndrome at least partly attributable to high sugar intake.

(7) A depleted pancreas can’t provide sufficient proteolytic enzymes to bust open cancer cell walls and render them defenseless from the immune system’s killer cells.

(8) Many nutritional experts attribute the rise of obesity and cardiac problems to higher refined carbohydrate and sugar consumption. And the condensed fructose in HFCS is absorbed first by the liver, which cannot metabolize it all and has to store accumulated fructose as fat creating fatty liver.
