Fermentation is the process by which one substance is broken down into simpler, more basic substances that are easier for the body to process making them more bioavailable. The catalyst for fermentation is normally lactic acid, yeast, bacteria, and/or enzymes. During this process B vitamins can be created and helps your body’s microbiome to produce also the Bs and as well, vitamin K. Fermented supplements are especially helpful for those who are suffering from digestive issues as they increase the good bacteria in your microbiome. This can help mood and support your overall health, as the nutrients in fermented foods are more easily available. Therefore, they may be more effective.
Soy is a great food/supplement to add to your diet. In addition to all the nutrients it contains, soy also contains anti-nutrients. These anti-nutrients prevent your body from absorbing essential minerals and trace elements and many times release unwanted agents that contribute to disease. Unfortunately, cooking will not destroy these anti-nutrients. Only the fermenting process will.
When you ferment a food, you’re basically using beneficial microbial cultures to pre-digest it. Those cultures transform large, hard-to-digest molecules into small, easy-to-digest ones. Not only that, fermented soy also reduces its allergic qualities. (Soy is one of the most common food allergens.) According to two published research papers, tests in samples of human blood showed that when soy is fermented, its potential to produce an allergic reaction is reduced by as much as 99 percent. The most important benefit of fermenting though, is that the process is thought to convert certain phyto-nutrients, into their active anti-cancer forms, genistein and daidzein. Both genistein and daidzein are powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents that have been shown in voluminous laboratory studies to work in multiple ways against cancer. Soybeans contain numerous cancer-fighting compounds that work synergistically so it is necessary to keep the whole food intact rather than isolate the genistein and diadzein as stand-alone supplements.
Fermented soy also has an incredible anti-inflammatory ability. Since most disease is caused by inflammation in the body this is a needed food to keep the body healthy. A mountain of evidence shows that populations who eat fermented soy regularly (tempe, miso, fermented soy powder) have lower rates of breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and leukemia. Raw soybeans, tofu, soymilk are examples of unfermented soy products. These have an enzyme that prevents conversion of the soy into digestible form and therefore may not have the health-creating effect we see in fermented soy. The enzyme is disabled in the fermenting process thereby enabling the release of health-giving properties. When paired with anti-inflammatories such as curcumin, we have a super beneficial addition to our natural medicine cabinet.

Fiber is the super sponge in the body. When the liver processes carcinogenic toxins out of the blood they end up in the gut. In order to completely eliminate them from the body, something in the gut must absorb them. Enter: fiber!
If you eat sugar, white rice and starchy carbs you will not be able to facilitate this absorption. No sponges will be available to bind up the toxins which will then be reabsorbed. This means they will end up in circulation all over again doubling your carcinogenic exposure. Increased fiber can intercede and help remove them properly.
Fruit is a great fiber food with raspberries and pears being at the top of the list. Or you can add whole wheat pasta, barley, bran flakes and oats to your diet. Women should try to eat at least 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day, while men should aim for 30 to 38 grams a day.

So what are joints? Joints form the connections between bones. The joints allow our bones to move and are made up of cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bursas which are fluid-filled sacs that help cushion the joint, and the synovial membrane that is the lining of the joint capsule that secretes synovial fluid to lubricate the joint. With many of us switching from carbonated soda pop to fruit, flavored water and tea drinks , we still have to be aware of ingredients. Some of those drinks are not organic, some may still use dyes or preservatives or sweeteners that are not good for your body even though the manufactures say they are safe in small amounts.
Coal tar derivatives used for coloring such as Red #40 and Yellow #6 can cause sensitivity to viruses and have been linked to cancer. Cochineal extract is used as a cola coloring and is basically ground up female cochineal bugs from South America. While this may not be appealing, we still don’t know if they are laden with critters or pesticides that could affect our health. Artificial sweeteners that go by several names now but started out as aspartame, when heated (like if left in your hot car in the summer) breaks down to toxic methyl alcohol. It has been implicated in Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s and can cause headaches and seizures in some people. AceK sounds safe enough but it has shown to cause cancer in animals. Sucralose is chlorinated sugar and has shown in studies to have a negative effect on the thymus gland, decreased red blood cell count, diarrhea among other potential conditions.
Agave is a sweetener in many natural foods drinks. The fructose content of agave syrup is much higher than that of high fructose corn syrup, which is of concern since some research has linked high fructose intake to weight gain (especially around the abdominal area), high triglycerides, heart disease and insulin resistance. And I’m sure by now you’ve read by blog posts on why to stay away from high fructose corn syrup (not the least is that it is GMO).
Chemicals such a Propylene glycol and ployethylene glycol (PEG) are sometimes added to drinks. The former has shown to be toxic and induce seizures in epileptics as well as affect the heart. It also inhibits the growth of the friendly bacteria in your intestines leading to constipation. PEG is used as a drug to induce diarrhea before surgery. Now why would you want to have that in your drink? It also has shown to interfere with blood thinners, birth control pills, and antiinflammatories.
So, the next time you pick up that sports drink, protein shake, or health drink – read the label!

Rhodiola Rosea plant
Adaptogenic herbs are “medicines” that move the body towards health by adjusting to the specific needs of each person. Ashwagandha helps to strengthen the adrenals, which helps hormones affect energy and mood. As an adaptogen, the herb used by a person with low adrenals will see improved energy and stamina, but a person under stress may see a lowering of their cortisol levels and a calming effect. Pub Med lists 688 studies on Ashwagands for a wide variety of illnesses such as cancer, kidney damage from diabetes, pain, gout, anxiety, depression and neurodegenerative disease. In specific cases it can make the person more resistant to physical and psychological stressors and improve energy and endurance. Ashwagandha is probably safe for short-term use. In large doses Ashwagandha may cause stomach upset, diarrhea and vomiting; side effects of long-term use are unknown. People with thyroid, auto-immune or liver issues should not use this herb.
Boswelia, also called frankincense, has 346 studies in the NIH database. It is made from gum resin from the Boswellia serrata tree. It is extremely effective to modulate inflammation in places that no drug except steroids can touch. But if no purified to remove beta boswellic acid to less than 5%, it can actually cause inflammation so you must be careful when you buy it.
Our favorite adaptogenic herb is Rhodiola Rosea. This has been used to lower the cortisol production, thereby rebalancing the cortisol and lowering the stress response. Evidence suggests that Rhodiola rosea may help those suffering from depression, to climb out of their psychological hole. Clinical studies on Rhodiola rosea have been performed at leading Soviet universities and medical academies. Rhodiola activates the enzyme lipase which is key to getting energy (ATP) released by cells which benefits athletes. In studying 112 athletes, researchers discovered that 89% of those supplementing with Rhodiola rosea showed a more rapid improvement in performance in sports such as track and field, swimming, speed skating and ski racing. Rhodiola rosea’s normalizing effect on the adrenal glands may also have the same effect on cholesterol, blood sugar, potassium levels and blood pressure thereby decreasing many risk factors for heart disease. It has many other benefits including improving memory and hearing, helping with Parkinson’s, weight management and immune support.
Be careful when you buy it. According to researchers, true Rhodiola rosea contains rosavin, rosin, rosarin and salidroside, while its adulterant contains only salidroside. Deer velvet (humanely harvested fuzz on the antlers) traditionally was used in China over a thousand years ago. Even today, many oriental countries rely on it for its rejuvenation properties, alleviating of menopause symptoms and as an aphrodisiac. In addition users have discovered its good for promoting growth in children, increasing blood in the body, helping cardiovascular disorders, preventing aging and loss of memory, treating menstrual disorders, addressing impotence and infertility and strengthening stamina.
Since 1991 New Zealand scientists have been carrying out a unique investigation into the composition and medical properties of velvet at AgResearch Invermay on the South Island. Their studies verified ancient claims to the efficacy of velvet’s properties. A Russian study revealed that velvet antler has hypotensive, erythopoietic, anti-stress stimulating, anti-inflammatory, gonadotrophic, growth and metabolic effects. Athletes have found velvet antler beneficial for repair of stressed joints and for the added stamina and endurance it seems to provide.
I personally had meniscus damage in my knees from skiing. Not want to face surgery I tried the New Zealand velvet antler (NZVEL) along with a topical cream that contained CMO (Joint Medic). Soybeans were originally grown as a cover crop to be turned into the soil as fertilizer. Somewhere along the line someone got the idea to make it into feed for animals and than somewhere further down the line someone decided it was good for people. But soybeans have an enzyme inhibitor that prevents them from being digested properly. Babies fed soy formula cry because of the gas it creates in their tummies. This soy, because it is unable to be broken down in the body, can affect the hormone regulation and many physicians warn that it can contribute to breast cancer. The soy protein isolates in foods such as tofu, soymilk and edamame have potentially anti-nutritive value due to their high phyate and oxalic acid levels.
But, there is a good side of soy too. When the soybean is fermented or sprouted this enzyme inhibitor disappears and thus the soy can be digested allowing nutritive bioavailability without the possible ill effects of the uncultured soybean. It displays characteristics of a selective estrogen receptor (ER) modulator (SERM) rather than an estrogen (Pike et al. 1999). What this means is that the beneficial isoflavone precursors (know to be used in cancer treatment) can be converted to their active forms, genestein and diadzein. However, genistein, with few exceptions, is not a major isoflavone of most soy foods and products consumed in Western countries, unless these have undergone fermentation, as in traditional foods such as tempeh, natto, and to some extent miso (Coward et al. 1993).
Soybeans are rich in nitrogen, polysaccharides, selenium, zinc, vitamin Bs, D2, E and K1, but this are less available unless the bean is sprouted or fermented. In addition to the nutritive value, fermented soy is a great source of protein that is lactose-free and vegan. With bodybuilders, dieters and health conscious individuals looking for a good meal replacement, a fermented soy product with added curcumin as an anti-inflammatory should be considered. Not only will you be getting a nutritious meal substitute, but you will be ingesting the disease fighting benefits of the isoflavones. So next time you go looking for a soy product make sure it is fermented or sprouted.

If you are afraid of getting arthritis, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer’s irritable bowel, colitis, chronic pain, cancer, metabolic syndrome, stroke and mental problems, then pay attention!
All of these stem from an increase in inflammation in the body which can be caused by overdosing of antibiotics, poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, too much alcohol, certain medications, poor dental hygiene and stress. Your body basically misreads information and after the inflammation is through fixing the immediate problem it somehow thinks it can cure everything so never shuts off. This becomes chronic inflammation and is the root cause of many of our illnesses.
In addition to changing your lifestyle and trying to reduce stress, you can curb this inflammation response with some supplements. Our favorite is curcumin and for short periods of time, holy basil (long-term use has some warnings with it). Curcumin in addition to being an anti-inflammatory also exhibits antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties. But you have to get the right kind of curcumin as many forms are not easily absorbed into the bloodstream. We like brands with the Curcumin c-3 complex which has clinical trials to support its efficacy. You can also investigate using tocotrienols (like a super vitamin E) which has shown to regulate inflammation markers and inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines, and has been used in cases of inflammatory bowel disease.
Also good are any anti-oxidants that fight free radicals. We take a chewable wafer that contains NT factor which acts on the cellular level to fight free radical damage and get the cells healthy again so they don’t reproduce deformed offspring (a common process that accelerates aging).
