Splenda carcinogenic?

The Center for Science in the Public Interest is urging caution in the use of the artificial sweetener Splenda.

A food safety advocacy group has downgraded its rating for sucralose, the artificial sweetener better known as Splenda, from “safe” to “caution” in its chemical guide to food additives.

The Washington-based Center for Science in the Public Interest announced Wednesday that it had long rated sucralose as “safe” but is now categorizing it as a “caution” pending peer review of an unpublished study by an independent Italian lab that found the sweetener caused leukemia in mice.

Previously, the only long-term animal-feeding studies were done by sucralose’s manufacturers, the CSPI said.

Other artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace-K) have received the center’s lowest rating, “avoid.”

Rebiana, a natural high-potency sweetener obtained from the plant stevia, is considered “safe” by the CSPI, though it says the sweetener needs better testing.

“Sucralose may prove to be safer than saccharin, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium, but the forthcoming Italian study warrants careful scrutiny before we can be confident that the sweetener is safe for use in food,” said CSPI Executive Director Michael F. Jacobson.

Antacids can mess up your gut.

stomachacheSo you get a stomach ache and reach for that antacid tablet or liquid. Ahhhh! Symptoms gone… but wait… soon they come back. What??? That substance that blocks the production of stomach acid also substantially blocks a normal body process resulting in side effects like more stomach gas, nausea, constipation and diarrhea. Plus it can cause nutrient deficiencies such as Vitamin B12. Acid-blockers reduce the secretion of a compound that binds to and assists the absorption of vitamin B12. So if that antacid reduces B12 absorption you can be at risk for a number of health conditions including dementia.

People using acid blockers are 4.5 times more at risk to develop pneumonia because without the bacteria from the intestine germs can migrate upstream to reach the throat and lungs. People also are more prone to hip fractures when they used acid-blockers. It is thought that these drugs may disrupt bone remodeling making them weaker.

So to avoid this antacid spiral you should consider adding to your diet digestive enzymes including Hydrocholric acid (HCL). The stomach bloating and gas is usually associated with a lack of HCL secretions if it occurs in the first 15 minutes. If it occurs after 45 minutes it is a sign of lack of pancreatic enzymes. For prevention a good all around multi-enzyme that includes protease, lypase, cellulase, lactase and amylase can help digest most of what you eat. We take these at every meal (because as we get older our pancreas gets tired and may not do the job as well), but with a big meal we may take two or three… very good assurance that the stomach aches will be a thing of the past and you won’t have to keep those antacids in your pocket.

8 ways sugar is killing you.

coneDr. Nancy Appleton, author of Suicide by Sugar, actually lists 146 reasons why sugar is ruining your health. We’ll look at eight for now.

(1) Sugar is a cancer cell’s favorite food. Even without having cancer, we all have a few cancer cells floating around.

When an acidic internal environment discourages normal cellular glucose metabolism with oxygen, those oxygen starved cells begin thriving by fermenting glucose and demanding more that our culture readily provides. Why encourage them?

(2) Candida yeast cells also exist in small amounts with everyone. When they overwhelm our friendly probiotic bacteria, we have Candida yeast overgrowth, which enables this fungus to infiltrate the body with all sorts of health problems.

Diets for discouraging and helping eliminate Candida promote complete abstinence from all forms of sugar until the overgrowth recedes. High sugar intake encourages Candida, which many say is cancer’s favorite habitat.

(3) Processed sugar and fructose are stripped of all mineral content and wind up leeching minerals from our bodies, including our teeth. They also inhibit mineral absorption, including magnesium. Magnesium is a commonly deficient and vitally important for over 300 metabolic processes.

(4) GMO corn is used to manufacture High Fructose Corn Syrup, and this process creates a mercury byproduct. GMO beets are used more now for creating sucrose (table sugar). Pure unprocessed sugar cane does contain nutrients, while processing involves nasty chemicals that can come along.

(5) Sugar is addictive. It stimulates central nervous system neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, giving you a pleasant buzz to crave more and promote overeating dead processed foods.

(6) Sugar creates glucose spikes that force the pancreas to produce insulin more often and beyond it’s normal capacity. This wears the pancreas down, limiting insulin production that leads to diabetes. Type II diabetes is insulin resistance, which is preceded by metabolic syndrome at least partly attributable to high sugar intake.

(7) A depleted pancreas can’t provide sufficient proteolytic enzymes to bust open cancer cell walls and render them defenseless from the immune system’s killer cells.

(8) Many nutritional experts attribute the rise of obesity and cardiac problems to higher refined carbohydrate and sugar consumption. And the condensed fructose in HFCS is absorbed first by the liver, which cannot metabolize it all and has to store accumulated fructose as fat creating fatty liver.

Pretty scary about new engineered salmon

fishA company is trying to railroad through the FDS, Genetically engineered farmed salmon. And they are using an eel type fish DNA to change things. All this will end up in your body when you eat them and since there are no labeling laws, you won’t have a clue as to which are Frankenfish and which are not.

These fish are more carcinogenic, more allergenic, less nutritious, mess up your intestinal flora and can devastate wild salmon if they get out of their holding pens.

Read about the hazards and the company that is pushing the FDA to get their GMO fish approved. http://GMOcriticalupdates.wordpress.com

AAP touts reasons to go organic

A clinical report published online in October by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) highlighted the attributes of organic foods and provided guidance to parents as to healthy food choices.

They cited the following contributions of organic foods:

. Lower exposure to pesticides known to cause disease.

. Lower exposure to drug-resistant bacteria.

. Higher beneficial nutrient levels.

. Lower levels of detrimental substances such as nitrates.

. Yields comparable to those of conventional farming techniques while avoiding environmental pollution and reducing fossil fuel consumption.

. Lower pesticide exposure for farm workers

. Lower overall environmental impact than conventional farming.

They warn that scientific research demonstrates that pregnant women and children are uniquely vulnerable to exposure to pesticides. It would make sense to consider that the rest of us could be affected too. So next time you shop for food weigh organic pricing vs. supermarket offerings. It may be a tad higher, but then what is your health worth and how much will you eventually spend on doctors and medicine when the toxins catch up with your immune system.

High-Fructose Diet Sabotages Learning, Memory

Drinking soda and eating sweets for as little as six weeks may make you stupid, according to a new UCLA study on sugar, learning and memory.

A new UCLA rat study funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is the first to show how a diet steadily high in fructose slows the brain, hampering memory and learning — and how omega-3 fatty acids can counteract the disruption. The study was published in peer-reviewed Journal of Physiology in its May 15, 2012 edition.

[Ed: so please read those labels as most sodas contain HFCS and so do a lot of candy and cookies. This also affects cholesterol management and weight control. The Omega-3 Fatty Acids we recommend are from plants, not fish oil. Helps to oxygenate the cells as well. See YES EFAs on the ForeverYoungCooperative link]

Can coffee disperse the mercury in your fish?

Could drinking coffee when you eat fish reduce your exposure to mercury poisoning? According to a Univ. of Montreal study published in the Journal of Environmental Research drinking coffee or tea with your meal containing fish could actually give dramatic results. The study used in vitro techniques to simulate human digestion and showed exposure to the toxin was reduced 50-60%. If you also boil or fry the fish as well you will increase those numbers.

Water Bad for you says the EU.

This is absurd. How many of you believe that water is bad for you? Please comment..

THE EU was ridiculed last night after it took three years to issue a new rule that water cannot be sold as healthy. In a scarcely believable ruling, a panel of experts threw out a claim that regular water consumption is the best way to rehydrate the body. The bizarre diktat from Brussels has far-reaching implications for member states, including Britain, as no water sold in the EU can now claim to protect against dehydration.

A spokesman for the Department of Health said: “Of course water hydrates. While we support the EU in preventing false claims about commercial products, we need to exercise common sense as far as possible.” Jose Manuel Barroso and David Cameron at a round table meeting earlier this year German professors Dr Moritz Hagenmeyer and Dr Andreas Hahn, of the Institute for Food Science and Human Nutrition at Hanover Leibniz University, applied for approval for the seemingly uncontentious claim that “regular consumption of significant amounts of water can reduce the risk of development of dehydration”. However, bureaucrats refused to back them. After a meeting in Italy a delegation of scientists concluded that reduced water content in the body was a symptom of dehydration rather than a risk factor that drinking water could control. Now their verdict has been turned into a regulation that will become UK law by December 6 and is bound to send shockwaves through the soft drinks industry. The EU has a long history of passing bizarre regulations, the most infamous being 1995 rules setting out dimensions for fruit and vegetables which led to excessively curved bananas and ugly carrots being banned. And last year attempts to regulate the use of root vegetables in Cornish pasties sparked chaos.

Omega3 deficiency linked to heart problems

According to Dr. William Harris people who tested sufficient for Omega-3’s in their red blood cells resisted acute coronary syndromes better, slowed their “cellular aging”, are less likely to develop ventricular arrhythmias if admitted to the hospital with Myocardial Infarction, had lower inflammatory markers, and had a slower heart rate. Those with Omega-3 deficiencies who had heart problems died at a faster rate than those with sufficient quantities. Patients with severe sleep apnea showed lower levels of Omega-3. People with depression showed lower Omega-3 levels. (excerpted from Whole Foods, November 2011, “The Omega-3 Index”, Richard A. Passwater.)

[note: I have been using an essential fatty acid product for several years that is a parent EFA (not derived like those from fish oil). My inflammatory markers came way down and so did my cholesterol levels. This brand had an Iowa study done which proved these parent oils were successful in lowering arterial plaque. This brand is called YES and can be purchased at www.foreveryoungcooperative.com at a discount.]
