We need help with a longevity survey

AAladyLOGOWe are getting ready to put together a course “Ten Days to Living Longer” and have been asking folks to take a short survey so we can determine what to include. Folks so far have been saying they are concerned about joints, eyes, cardio, energy levels and memory. If you have a minute (really its just about a minute) could you take the survey too? On the thank you page there is a link so you can get a free download of our ebook “Think and Feel Younger” for your trouble. We will keep you posted on other additions to the survey as they come in.

Can smart phones affect weight gain?

bluecellExposure to the type of blue light emitted by smartphones, computers, and tablets immediately before and after dinner increased hunger and impacted glucose metabolism in people who participated in a small Northwestern University study.

If true, this can inhibit your ability to diet successfully. We’ll see if further studies support this but we know that the blue light interrupts your melatonin production so if you are having trouble going to sleep… turn the computer and cell phone off at dinnertime.

Alternatives to drugs for stress and anxiety.

headacheAccording to the American Psychological Assn., the number of people who suffer from stress and anxiety has increased by 44% over the last five years. General anxiety disorders affect over 6 million people with women complaining of stress twice as much as men. Stress can be brought on by so many reasons, from rushed deadlines, social fears, childhood trauma, traumatic events to illness.

Natural approaches to stress may be tried before drugs. Starting with supporting the brain, good nutrition is essential including foods such as fish, hemp, avocados, coconut and nuts. Since the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline are responsible for creating equilibrium we need to realize that chronic stress can negatively affect the thyroid, blood sugar, bone density, belly fat production and cognitive performance.

In addition to relaxation techniques that include meditation, yoga, exercise, guided imagery and self hypnosis, you may consider taking holy basil which will have a calming effect which acts as a mild nervine due to it’s action that reduces histamine responses in the blood . Ashwaganda is another herb that helps in reducing cortisol levels.  Rhodiola rosea is especially effective at curbing depression, decreasing fatigue and enhancing mental sharpness by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is considered the happy hormone. You have to be careful with rhodiola as it needs to be harvested at its peak and not past peak growing. Many cheaper supplements don’t care about that and you won’t get the effectiveness.

Astragalus is an adaptogenic herb that helps protect the body from prolonged stress. When processed correctly, it helps inhibit chromosomal instability by creating a healthy telomere microenvironment. This impacts telomere length (caps at the end of the DNA strand that prevents the DNA from unraveling or breaking) reducing cellular death and slows the aging process. L-Theanine is an amino acid (a building block for proteins) found in green tea. Evidence from human electroencephalograph (EEG) studies show that it has a direct effect on the brain. L-theanine significantly increases activity in the alpha frequency band which indicates that it relaxes the mind without inducing drowsiness. It increases serotonin and  stimulates the brain’s alpha waves which induces relaxation. These two are a good combination and when I take a supplement that has them in it, I feel happy and my stress levels reduce. I call this MY HAPPY PILL.  If you want to read more about it go to the website www.LongLifeNews.com and click on Cell Metrix. I’ve tried lots of supplements for stress and this one seems to get me smiling and let me cope much better with daily stresses, road rage and the computer !

Why do adaptogenic herbs adjust to the person?

rhodiolaplant

Rhodiola Rosea plant

Adaptogenic herbs are “medicines” that move the body towards health by adjusting to the specific needs of each person. Ashwagandha helps to strengthen the adrenals, which helps hormones affect energy and mood. As an adaptogen, the herb used by a person with low adrenals will see improved energy and stamina, but a person under stress may see a lowering of their cortisol levels and a calming effect. Pub Med lists 688 studies on Ashwagands for a wide variety of illnesses such as cancer, kidney damage from diabetes, pain, gout, anxiety, depression and neurodegenerative disease. In specific cases it can make the person more resistant to physical and psychological stressors and improve energy and endurance. Ashwagandha is probably safe for short-term use. In large doses Ashwagandha may cause stomach upset, diarrhea and vomiting; side effects of long-term use are unknown. People with thyroid, auto-immune or liver issues should not use this herb.

Boswelia, also called frankincense, has 346 studies in the NIH database. It is made from gum resin from the Boswellia serrata tree. It is extremely effective to modulate inflammation in places that no drug except steroids can touch.  But if no purified to remove beta boswellic acid to less than 5%, it can actually cause inflammation so you must be careful when you buy it.

Our favorite adaptogenic herb is Rhodiola Rosea. This has been used to lower the cortisol production, thereby rebalancing the cortisol and lowering the stress response. Evidence suggests that Rhodiola rosea may help those suffering from depression, to climb out of their psychological hole. Clinical studies on Rhodiola rosea have been performed at leading Soviet universities and medical academies. Rhodiola activates the enzyme lipase which is key to getting energy (ATP) released by cells which benefits athletes. In studying 112 athletes, researchers discovered that 89% of those supplementing with Rhodiola rosea showed a more rapid improvement in performance in sports such as track and field, swimming, speed skating and ski racing. Rhodiola rosea’s normalizing effect on the adrenal glands may also have the same effect on cholesterol, blood sugar, potassium levels and blood pressure thereby decreasing many risk factors for heart disease. It has many other benefits including improving memory and hearing, helping with Parkinson’s, weight management and immune support.

Be careful when you buy it. According to researchers, true Rhodiola rosea contains rosavin, rosin, rosarin and salidroside, while its adulterant contains only salidroside. The true Rhodiola rosea is the most biologically active, Unfortunately, often so-called Rhodiola rosea herbal formulas sold in the United States contain no rosavin. They are standardized using only common salidroside. For true Rhodiola rosea check out this product:  Click Here  Email the publisher for a free ebook which will be out Spring 2015: safe@bcn.net

Velvet Antler for Joints, Anti-Aging and Athletes.

deerDeer velvet (humanely harvested fuzz on the antlers) traditionally was used in China over a thousand years ago.  Even today, many oriental countries rely on it for its rejuvenation properties, alleviating of menopause symptoms and as an aphrodisiac. In addition users have discovered its good for promoting growth in children, increasing blood in the body, helping cardiovascular disorders, preventing aging and loss of memory, treating menstrual disorders, addressing impotence and infertility and strengthening stamina.

Since 1991 New Zealand scientists have been carrying out a unique investigation into the composition and medical properties of velvet at AgResearch Invermay on the South Island. Their studies verified ancient claims to the efficacy of velvet’s properties. A Russian study revealed that velvet antler has hypotensive, erythopoietic, anti-stress stimulating, anti-inflammatory, gonadotrophic, growth and metabolic effects. Athletes have found velvet antler beneficial for repair of stressed joints and for the added stamina and endurance it seems to provide.

I personally had meniscus damage in my knees from skiing. Not want to face surgery I tried the New Zealand velvet antler (NZVEL) along with a topical cream that contained CMO (Joint Medic). I hate to say the word “cure”, but I no longer have trick knees, no pain and no clicking in my knee. The combination seems to have restored my synovial fluid and somehow reduced the bone on bone trauma whenever I would run or bike. I used to wear a brace to protect the lateral movement on my knee… no more! I can bike without becoming crippled afterwards and hiking and skiing are no problem anymore.

Velvet Antler warrants further investigation if you have a specific condition you think it may help. There is a copy of the book  “Velvet Antler, Powerful tonic for joints, infertility, blood pressure, athletic performance and more” available at http://bit.ly/1ncFoid for $1 as a PDF or you can buy the paperback at Amazon http://amzn.to/1oTH0SI. More info on the actual NZVEL product I used is available at http://bit.ly/1kdt55v.

The cause of many health problems.

If you are afraid of getting arthritis, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, Alzheimer’s irritable bowel, colitis, chronic pain, cancer, metabolic syndrome, stroke and mental problems, then pay attention!

All of these stem from an increase in inflammation in the body which can be caused by overdosing of antibiotics, poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking, too much alcohol, certain medications, poor dental hygiene and stress.  Your body basically misreads information and after the inflammation is through fixing the immediate problem it somehow thinks it can cure everything so never shuts off. This becomes chronic inflammation and is the root cause of many of our illnesses.

In addition to changing your lifestyle and trying to reduce stress, you can curb this inflammation response with some supplements. Our favorite is curcumin and for short periods of time, holy basil (long-term use has some warnings with it). Curcumin in addition to being an anti-inflammatory also exhibits antibacterial and hypoallergenic properties. But you have to get the right kind of curcumin as many forms are not easily absorbed into the bloodstream. We like brands with the Curcumin c-3 complex which has clinical trials to support its efficacy.  You can also investigate using tocotrienols (like a super vitamin E) which has shown to regulate inflammation markers and inhibited pro-inflammatory cytokines, and has been used in cases of inflammatory bowel disease.

Also good are any anti-oxidants that fight free radicals. We take a chewable wafer that contains NT factor which acts on the cellular level to fight free radical damage and get the cells healthy again so they don’t reproduce deformed offspring (a common process that accelerates aging).

Genetic mods to our bodies?

gmoThe battle over GMO labeling goes on with the EPA proposing to RAISE the allowed residue limits of glyphosate in food and feed crops! (As reported by GM Watch)  We have mentioned several bad things that can happen to our bodies from ingesting the herbicide Roundup and from the results of eating animals fed GMO corn. This is the latest warning because now they are targeting wheat! This one outlines how the quest to turn off specific genes in a plant can also turn off genes in our bodies. I doubt that’s a good thing…

  • While Monsanto insists that Roundup is safe and “minimally toxic” to humans, new research argues that glyphosate residues on and in food enhance the damaging effects of other food-borne chemical residues and environmental toxins to disrupt normal body functions and induce disease

  • Glyphosate inhibits enzymes that catalyze the oxidation of organic substances, which, according to the researchers, is an overlooked component of its toxicity to mammals

  • The currently accepted dogma is that glyphosate is not harmful to humans because the shikimate pathway is absent in all animals. However, this pathway is present in both human and mammal’s gut bacteria, which play a massively important and heretofore largely overlooked role in human physiology

  • Rather than using in vitro DNA modification, a new breed of genetically engineered wheat is designed to produce double-strand RNA, by which the plant can silence specific genes. Research has shown that molecules created in the plant, intended to silence wheat genes to change its carbohydrate content, can match a large number of human genes and potentially turn them off as well

  • Former US Navy staff scientist Dr. Nancy Swanson did studies:

“Prevalence and incidence data show correlations between diseases of the organs and the increase in Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in the food supply, along with the increase in glyphosate-based herbicide applications. More and more studies have revealed carcinogenic and endocrine disrupting effects of Roundup at lower doses than those authorized for residues found in Genetically Modified Organisms.”

“The endocrine disrupting properties of glyphosate can lead to reproductive problems: infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, and sexual development. Fetuses, infants and children are especially susceptible because they are continually experiencing growth and hormonal changes. For optimal growth and development, it is crucial that their hormonal system is functioning properly.

The endocrine disrupting properties also lead to neurological disorders (learning disabilities (LD), attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), autism, dementia, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). Those most susceptible are children and the elderly.”

Make sure you look for GMO free labels or since there is no law, you may have to ask the manufacturer of corn, soy, wheat if any of their ingredients are GMO.

The JIVA products on our blog links are non GMO.

Red wine – resveratrol – anti-cancer aid.

Another good reason to drink red wine!

wineNew info from Cancer Science: Michael Nicholl, an assistant professor of surgical oncology in the Univ. Missouri School of Medicine found that when exposed to resveratrol, tumor cells were more susceptible to radiation treatment and produced better results than when each was used alone.  Previous studies suggested resveratrol helped reduce inflammation and inhibited the final phase of multistage carcinogenesis as well as suppressed cell growth. Now they have found it enhances radiation effectiveness.

The thinking is that it increases the activity of perforin and granzyme B, which are necessary to kill the tumor cells. Resveratrol is derived from peanuts, mulberry skins, grape skins and red wine. It has been known to reduce the risk of heart disease and inflammation due to its antioxidant properties. In a recent laboratory study it was shown to inhibit prostate cancer androgens – a group of hormones that play a role in male traits and reproductive activity. It is also believed that resveratrol works as an effective anti-aging ingredient because it is thought to stimulate a gene that helps to slow down the aging process. The most common concern regarding resveratrol side effects is that it has estrogen related properties; as such, if it is taken by women with estrogen sensitivities, it might pose mild health risks. Therefore, such women should consult with their doctor before use. Other side effects of resveratrol involve its blood thinning properties; people taking blood thinning medications should check with their physician before taking this supplement. But generally few people have any problem using this amazing supplement. For more informationhttp://bit.ly/VZaEWn
